Women athletes shine at Lewes SAL match

With the track and field competition now in full swing it was the women that shone in the rainy athletics match at the Lewes track over the weekend. Up against teams from London, Havant, Swindon and Surrey the joint Lewes and Haywards Heath team came a very credible third thanks to some great performances by the women team members.

Leading the charge was Lewes’s own wonder girl Livvy Connor who gained first place and maximum points in no less than 5 events. First win of the day was in the 100m won in a time of 13.2secs closely followed by the 100m hurdles won in 16.2secs. Showing great versatility Livvy went on to win both the pole vault with a leap of 3.20m and the triple jump with a jump of 10.85m. Her last win of the day was in the 4x100m relay won by the team in 53.3secs.

Also making a great contribution to the team score was Emma Robertson who lapped all the other competitors in winning the 3000m race in 11.03.7. Hannah Lewis moving on from winning a bronze medal at the recent Sussex County Championships with a personal best throw of 27.23m won the javelin event with a throw of 23.13m.

Other event winners were Laura Penfold (B 100m -13,8secs); Katie Grant (B 200m -28.3secs); Abigail Redd (B 1500m – 5.55.7). Also scoring great points were Millie Hemsley who won the B pole vault with 2.90m and Lucie Venables who won the B 100m hurdles in 20.0secs.

Putting in great performances were Larissa Carter who came second in the Hammer event with a throw of 35.29m despite having to throw a heavier hammer. Also having a super match was the greatly improving Ella Mundy who ran a great race to come second in the A 1500m with a time of 5.55.7.

Event winners from the men’s side were Kai Rahman who won both the B 100m and B 200m events in times of 12.3secs and 25.4secs respectively. Kai also came second in the B long jump with a leap of 5.13m Also on the winning trail was Tom Mullen who won both the B 3000m steeple chase in a time of 12.04.2 and the B 3000m race in 10.05.2. Jamie Seddon won an exciting 3000m race in a time of 9.58.7 and James Martin won the B 1500m race in a time of 4.44.6. Showing that age is no barrier to a great result Paul Cousins an over 50 athlete was only beaten into second place by 9 seconds in the A 3000m steeple chase with a time of 11.35.7.
