Weekend of travels for Lewes Athletes

Whilst the senior runners were running in France the junior athletes were competing at Southampton. Both groups were very successful but in different ways.

Eleven Lewes AC members travelled to Marolles in the Loire Valley to compete in regional races put on by the Lewes AC twinned athletic club AS Marolles. The first Lewes AC runner in the very competitive, tough multi-terrain 20K race and upholding the reputation of the Lewes club against all the French clubs was Andrew Masters who finished in 7th position overall and 4th in his age category. Also upholding the reputation of Lewes AC was Sally Norris who was 2nd women to finish in the 20K race followed by Sophie Wainwright a little further down the finishing order.

Run concurrently with the 20K race was a relay race for couples. The first leg was a run of 8K with the second leg 12K. It was in this race that the Lewes women runners excelled with Anne-Marie Turton and Katherine Emery winning the event outright.

The most outstanding performance of the weekend must be that of Andrew Chitty who was minutes ahead of his nearest competitor in the men aged over 60 category in the 20K race.

Junior athletes from the Lewes club travelled to Southampton to compete in the Youth Development League for athletes aged under17 and 20. Up against major teams from Dorset, Kingston and Southampton and the Brighton and Hove Club there were some great performances by Lewes AC athletes. Competing in Team Sussex with athletes from East Grinstead and Haywards Heath Harriers the Sussex team missed out gaining third place in the 7 match event from Southampton by just 0.5 of a point.

13 Lewes AC athletes gained personal best times and distances in their events with 5 Lewes athletes winning their particular events. Scot Staples won the U17 men javelin with a throw of 45.60m; Millie Hemsley won the U17 women pole vault with a vault of 3.00m and Lucy Thompson won the U20 women pole vault with 2.45m. On the track Grace Salter won the U17W 80m hurdles B event with a time of 13.4secs.

Having a very competitive and successful day was Livvy Connor who won not only the U20W pole vault with a club record vault of 3.50m but also secured a club record when winning the U20W triple jump a jump of 11.29m. Not content with these two wins and club records Livvy went on the win the U20W hurdles in 15.7secs and the B string long jump with a jump of 5.07m.
