Walking and running successes
Following some hard training since competing in the English Schools Championships in September, Ollie Hopkins Lewes AC ‘s junior race walker set another personal best and broke his own club record when finishing second in the Steyning AC open walks at Horsham last Saturday.
A fast start saw him up with the leaders over the first lap. Settling into a steady rhythm and walking with an excellent style he picked up the pace over the last kilometre to record 18mins 28secs for the 3K event. This time was half a minute quicker than his previous time. The 5k race which was held in tandem with the 3K race included two past Olympic walkers and a number of junior internationals. Ollie was able to gain a great deal of experience by competing in such a high category field.
The previous week end at Bexley Kent Ollie warmed up with a sharp road 2.5K race over a two lap hilly circuit but walking very comfortably he recorded a time of 15mins 20secs. This coming weekend he will be attempting his first 5kilometer race at Tonbridge in readiness for the Southern Road Championships in early January.
There was great running from Leo Brewer from the Lewes club in the South of England Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Oxford. He helped the Sussex boys under13 team to gain a bronze medal in this tough competition. As second Sussex finisher in tenth place Leo helped his team to come away with the medal.
The Under 13 Girls team are still waiting for their result to be confirmed. A mix up in the race scoring had the Sussex team initially declared winners then placed third and eventually placed fourth. However all may not be lost and a bronze medal is still on the cards as the results are still to be confirmed. Rosie Gainsford from the Lewes club finished as the third team member and will wait to hear if she has gained a well earned medal
The Sussex senior women’s team finished in eight place and had three Lewes AC members running for Sussex. The team was led home by Emma Robertson in 23rd place, Joscelyn Lowden in 38th and Lara Bararzzuol 39th.place.
