Track and Field competitions at the Lewes Track

With the track and field competition well and truly underway despite the unseasonable weather Lewes AC teams have had two closely fought matches at the Lewes Track. The first in action at the track were the Lewes under 13 athletes who were in competition with teams from Brighton and Hove AC, Brighton Phoenix, Hastings AC and Eastbourne Rovers.

It was neck and neck between Brighton and Lewes through out the match with Brighton coming out winners with 189 points to Lewes’s 140 points. In third position were the Phoenix team with 96 points, followed by Hastings with 57 points and Eastbourne with 50 points.

Throughout the match despite being early in the season many Lewes athletes achieved life time bests in this match. These included Ben Walters with 1min 46.3secs and Joe Webbon with 1min 56.1secs in the boys 600m: Also with a personal best in the 600m was Flo Brook with 2mins 02.4secs. On Saturday it was the turn of the senior and under 17 Lewes athletes to take on teams from London and Salisbury in the Southern Athletics League. In this match it was really nip and tuck all through the day with first one team taking the lead then the other and so on right to the finish. At the end Belgrave edged a win over Lewes with 263.5 points to Lewes’s 258 points with Salisbury in third with 250.5 points.

During the match there were some great performances by Lewes athletes. Winning both their two main events were Anna Hopcroft who won the women’s hammer with a throw of 44.66m and the women’s discus with a throw of 22.63m. Also in the two wins category was Matt Grant who won the shot putt with a putt of 12.00m and the men’s discus with a throw of 34.66m.

Livvy Connor again had a great match winning both the women’s pole vault with a vault of 3.20m and the women’s triple jump with jump of 10.85m. This jump was not only club record number 37 for Livvy but also beyond the qualifying distance to compete at English Schools. Livvy also equalled the winning height in the high jump event but came second on count back. Not to be outdone by the younger members of the Lewes team Mark Rahman jumped a personal best of 10.57m in the men’s triple jump which gave him a new club record for the over 50 men

Though out the match points are awarded for performances to decide the Man and Women of the match. With a score of 796 points Anna Hopcroft won the Women of the Match award and Aaron Guilford was joint winner of the Man of the Match award with a score of 761 points. Aaron ran a personal best in both the 200m (22.4secs) and 400m (50.9secs) which are also both new club records.
