Sussex Combined Events Championships – Three medals for Lewes AC athletes

There were three athletes competing in the Combined Events Championships over the weekend all of whom came away with championship medals.

Myles Bickmore-Vaughan in the U13 boys Pentathlon won silver, Livvy Conner in the U15 girls won gold and Ella James in the U17 women’s Heptathlon won a bronze medal.

Myles got off to a great start in the first of his five events taking an early lead in the Long Jump with 4.23m he finished 2nd in the 75m hurdles with 14.66 seconds and 2nd in the Shot with 6.14m. He then won the High Jump with a height of 1.36m. This meant he was lying second going into the last event trailing by 128 points. He knew he had to have a good run in the 800m to get the gold medal. Whilst he won the race by 6 seconds this only gave him an extra 43 points not quite enough to win the gold so he claimed a well deserved silver medal.

Ella started the competition slowly coming 4th in the hurdles, probably her weakest event. There were good performance for the rest of the events on day one coming 2nd in the High Jump, 2nd in the Shot and 2nd in the 200m. With these results she moved up to 2nd place overall. On the 2nd day Ella continued with a strong performance in the long jump, winning with a personal best of 4.63m. This meant that Ella was now in the overall lead overall with just two events still to come the Javelin and the 800m. Ella threw well in the Javelin and whilst throwing a personal best of 15.48m this only gave her third place in the javelin but still just in the lead overall.
It all rested on the last event the 800m. Whilst staying in touch with the leaders in the race and finishing in third position it wasn’t quite enough to win gold. The two leaders in the race secured more points to add to their overall total score and pushed Ella into the bronze position in the overall heptathlon competition. Ella as the reigning Sussex Heptathlon Champion was however delighted to come away with a Bronze medal.

Also competing on Sunday was Livvy Connor in the U15 girl’s pentathlon. Like Myles, Livvy started well and won her first event, the long jump with a distance of 4.70m which gave her a narrow lead over the other competitors. Her lead was then reduced to just 2 points when she finished 2nd in the 75m hurdles with 12.53 seconds. In the next event the shot putt Livvy extended her lead with a putt of 8.53m. She extended her lead even further with a personal best in the high jump with a jump of1.53m. This meant Livvy was leading going into final event the 800m. With a second place finish in 2mins 47.22secs Livvy secure the gold medal overall.
