Success and near misses for Lewes AC at the Sussex Road Relay Championships

There was much success and a few near misses for the Lewes AC teams at the Sussex Road Relay Championships held at Christ’s Hospital on Easter Saturday. The gold medal successes came from the club’s young athletes and the medal near misses at the other end of the age spectrum.

Starting the day off with a bang was the team of three under13 boys who won the gold medal with a time 18mins 48secs from Brighton and Hove and Worthing. Jay Atkins led off with a time of 6mins 17secs followed by Ben Walters 6.17 with Leo Brewer sealing the gold medal with his lap time of 6.12.

The boys under13 B team of Will Carey, Tom Nettleton and Louis Soudain finished in a very creditable 9th position with a time of 20mins 32secs. The girls under 13 team came in 7th and was made up of Rosie Gainsford (6.55); Eva Johnston-Ellis (7.14) and Rosie Hobbs (7.53)

The star performers must be the under 15 girls team who not only won team gold in front of Horsham Blue Start and Brighton and Hove but also ran two of the fastest laps. Grace Brock led the team off and her time of 6mins 32secs was the fastest lap of the day. Ella Mundy took over and her time for the second lap of 6.40 was the third fastest lap of the day. Amy Fines brought the team home with a time of 7.12 giving a winning time for the team 20mins 24sec.

The under 15 boys of Ben Martin (5.58) Jasper Baker (6.25) and Joey Webban (6.31) finished in 5th position only 20 seconds away from a medal winning time.

It was always going to be hard to win medals in the senior men’s 6 lap race with international runners scattered through out the field. However the senior men’s team pulled out the stops with a fantastic set of times to take the team bronze medal. This was only 11 seconds away from winning a silver medal. Brighton Phoenix won the race in a time of 60mins 12secs followed by the Brighton Club with 63.33 and Lewes in third with 63.44. Patrick Hough completed the 2.2 mile lap in 10mins 16secs, followed by Ben Savill (10.45); Lewis Sida (11.12); Josh Burgess (10.34); David Bradford (10.40 and matt Bradford (10.17)

Winning a team silver medal in the 4 lap race was the team of over 40 men just missing the gold won by Crawley AC by around 35 seconds. The Lewes time of 45mins 26secs included a lap time by Robbie James of 11mins 05secs that was the third fastest of the day. The other times were Jonathon Burrell (11.27); Allan Jackson (11.43) and Andrew Masters 11mins 11secs.

Also claiming a fast lap was Helen Sida who in the women over 40 race ran the third fastest lap of the day with 13.16. With Karin Divall (14.16) and Lisa Jackson (15.12) this gave the team a time of 42mins 44secs just 10 seconds from winning the team bronze medal.

The Lewes over 60 men’s team of Bob Hughes (14.56) Peter Kennedy (13.35) and Andrew Chitty (13.07 finished in great style in 4th position. The senior women’s A team of Lizzie Keep (14.13); Amy Davila (12.09) and Joscelin Lowden (12.07) also finished in 4th place. The B team came in 10th with Maria Barrow (13.17); Megan Taylor (13.10) and Evie Rothwell (14.41)
