Star Track with Lewes AC and investment in athletics
For the first week of the school holidays 70 aspiring young athletes enjoyed five days of fun athletics. During the morning sessions they were all coached in the running, jumping and throwing events that make up the sport of track and field athletics. In the afternoons they took part in athletic based games having been formed into teams with names from countries competing in the Olympic Games.
With many more youngsters wanting to take part than places available at Lewes this small example illustrates the challenge now facing the sport of athletics and more particularly this government.
Unless there is now increased financial investment in the grass roots of the sport and in school sports the interest generated by the Olympics will just fade away into nothing. With all track and field clubs in Sussex having waiting lists it is now up to the government to increase its investment to catch up with the tremendous and inspiring lead given by the GB athletes and by the sports governing bodies.
