South East Inter-County Schools XC, British Universities XC, Chichester 10k, 4-5 February 2012
There was a good turnout for Lewes AC last weekend in two countries and two counties despite the very poor weather conditions.
Firstly, Five Lewes AC boys represented Sussex County at the South East Inter County schools cross country at Basildon on Saturday. It was a bitterly cold day and a few flakes of snow fell before the races started. In the junior boys race Aidan Briffett was 54th in 17:22, Connor Sullivan 75th in 17:48 and Sam Rogers 80th in 17.:5. In the senior boys’ race, run over 6.6km including two laps with a challenging hill breaking up a relatively flat course, Ludo Goodliffe was 15th in 22:50 and Tim Calliafas 53rd in 24:53.
Three women from Lewes braved several inches of snow in Wales to run in the British Universities (BUCS) Cross Country championships in Cardiff. Caitlin Lloyd finished in 66th position in 27:07, Gina Wilson in 138th position in 29:14 and in 195th position was Rose Fernando in 30:30.
Meanwhile seven Lewes athletes set out in snow and ice to travel to Chichester for a 10k road race on Sunday morning. The snow disappeared past Hove and the race was run in wet, cold and grey conditions over a new faster course. First over the line for Lewes was Matt Bradford in 41st place in 33:45, closely followed by Tom Morris 44th place in 33:57, and third Lewes man home was Tim Calliafas in 86th position, and also the first under-17 man in a personal best time of 37:26. Lizzie Keep also had a personal best time and was the first Lewes woman home in 44:04, she was 41st woman overall, and 2nd under-20 woman. Karin Divall was fourth vet woman (over 50) in a time of 45:19, and Carolyn Bennett ran a personal best of 46:25, with Dave Leach finishing in 46:26.
