Rob Mullett & Alan Velecky succeed at the Brighton Marathon

There was both success and disappointment for the Lewes AC runner Alan Velecky in the Brighton Marathon. The success and it was a big one was that of the 7,600 runners in the race Alan finished as 28th man and 32nd overall. His time was 2hours 53mins and 59seconds. At 47 years old this was a tremendous result and put him as the first over 40 runner in the race.

The disappointment, and this comes from Alan himself, is that he failed to meet his target of finishing in 2hours 47mins the 47 minutes to reflect his age. On a positive note Alan will be going for 2hrs 48mins next year a slightly slower target but he will be a year older! (Photo of Alan 2 metres from the finish still going strong.)

Another success story was that of Rob Mullett a Lewes athlete who was asked to pace the elite runners over the first 10 kilometres of the marathon. This was both an honour and a reflection of Rob’s abilities but also a significant challenge. Rob rose to the challenge and took the group of elite Kenyan an Ethiopian runners through the first 10K in a touch over 30mins a speed that would have won many a 10K race in the UK. There were many other success stories of Lewes AC runners doing well in the marathon including Simon Thomas (3hrs 12mins 16sec) Lewis Sida (3.13.29) Mat Homewood (3.20.57) Mat Stevens (3.26.57) Mauro Lazzati (3.29.18) Dominic Osman-allu (3.38.43) Lizzie Keep (3.39.50) Paul Coleman (3.40.07) Neil Baker (3.43.24) Faith Daughtery (3.48.32) Tim Monson (4.27.20) Francis Witt (4.32.51)
