Records and medals galore for Lewes AC junior athletes
With some tough top level competitions over the weekend Lewes AC athletes came away with some excellent results. Seven Lewes AC athletes helped the Sussex County team at the English Schools competition return from the Gateshead with the best County results for over 50 years.
Leading the way with a gold medal performance in the senior girl’s pole vault was Livvy Connor. She not only secured the gold medal but also equalled the Championship record and set a new club and Sussex County under 20 pole vault record with her vault of 3.85m.
Not content with winning the gold medal at Gateshead Livvy hot footed it back to Sussex to help Sussex in the Inter-County match taking place at Crawley. Up against teams from Kent, Essex, Surrey, Middlesex and Hertfordshire Livvy competed in the triple jump and scored great points in second place with a jump of 11.42m.
Winning a silver medal in the English Schools boy’s under15 pole vault was Bill Saunders with a vault of 3.55m. Also having a great result in this high level competition was Jack Harris who came 7th with a vault of 3.15m.
In the under 17 girl’s pole vault Millie Hemsley secured 11th position by vaulting 3.15m. Larissa Carter competing in the under 17 girl’s hammer event just missed getting to the final group of throwers with a throw of 46.63m. Whilst just missing the final cut Larissa had the satisfaction of throwing a new club record.
Also making an impact on the national stage at the English Schools event was Scott Staples in the under 17 boy’s javelin event. His throw of 55.39m gained him 6th position overall.
In a different national event Anoushka Fairhurst won a gold medal at the National Prep Schools Final in Birmingham. In winning the medal she set a new Lewes AC club record for the under 13 girls javelin with a throw of 25.73m
Also in record breaking form was Ben Martin who at the open athletics event at Tonbridge broke his own 3000m under 15 boys club record by over 5 seconds with a time of 9mins 34.21secs.
Another young Lewes AC athlete that was very busy over the weekend was the club’s race walker Ollie Hopkins. Following his second place in the 3000m walk at Tonbridge with a time of 17mins 27secs he then went on to represented the South of England against the Midlands, the North, Wales and Scotland at the inter-area walking match at Tamworth. In this, for the first time, he broke 30mins for the 5000m walk with a time 29mins 14secs.
Making his way back to Crawley he took part on Sunday in the inter-county match and was the second under 17 walker in the 3000m walk with personal best time of 17mins 06.87secs
