Medals, club records and near misses for Lewes AC runners at the Sussex Road Relay Championships.
Up against 220 club teams from across Sussex clubs there were some great results and some near misses for Lewes AC runners.
Leading the way with a team gold medal were the boys in Lewes under-13 team made up of Aaron Duncan, Fenton Daveron and Jack Gardener. Not only did their time of 18mins 19secs win the gold medal but Aaron Duncan ran the fastest lap with a time 6.00mins and Jack Gardener the third fastest lap with 6.02. Showing the depth of talent in the Lewes club the B team finished in 14th place with the C team 16th and the D team 24th.
The winning time of 18.19 by the Lewes AC under 13 team broke the 14 year old record of 18.28 held previously by the team from Brighton Phoenix. The Lewes team is only the 6th non Brighton team to be record holders in the history of the event on this course.
Moving up to the team of the boys aged under-15 there was a near miss by the team winning the bronze medal position by just 8 seconds with a time of 17mins 42secs. Finishing in 4th place was Will Carey, Atticus Mohapi-Dobouny and Ben Walters. The club’s B team finished in 10th position.
In gold medal form was the Lewes team of over 50 men. Not only did the team finish in first place with a time of 35mins 48secs two members of the team finished with the second and third fastest leg times of their race. Jonathon Burrell led the team with a time of 11.44 followed by Colin Bennett with the second fastest time of 11.35 and Martin Komen the third fastest time with 12.30.
In club record breaking time were the men’s over-60 team who broke the long standing club record for this age group by just one second with 40mins 35secs. However the team finished just out of the medals in fourth place, the team consisted of Peter Kennedy (13.51); Andrew Chitty (13.19) and David Prince-Isles (13.24)
The best result of the day must be that achieved by the Senior Men’s team winning the silver medal. This is the first time a Lewes AC senior men’s team has won any sort of medal at the Sussex Road Relays Championships. Up against the Brighton Phoenix team that included the international runner Charlie Grice and other strong Sussex clubs from Brighton, Crawley, Worthing, Chichester and across the County the Lewes team finished in second place with a time of 61mins 47secs. Leading the 6 man team off was Patrick Hough with a leg time of 10.01, followed by Callum Ipton with 10.32, Matt Bradford 10.10, Lewis Sida 10.42, Josh Burgess 10.24 and Tom Evan breaking the 10 minute barrier with 9mins 59seconds.
The senior women’s team were sadly depleted by injuries but nevertheless managed a very creditable 5th place with a time of 37mins 52secs. The team consisted of Gina Wilson (12.22); Maria Barrow (12.40) and Emma Rollings (12.49). Finishing in 8th position in their race was the women’s aged over 40 with Lydia Godfrey (12.26) Karin Divall (13.42) and Jane Boyes (15.11)
Finishing in 5th place in their race with a time of 49mins 42secs was the men’s over 40 team of Mike Green (11.58); Andrew McLennan (11.56); Robert Cooper (12.20) and Max Soudain (13.29)
