Lewes fight on in the Vets League
The evening of Wednesday 30th May saw the second round of the Sussex Vets’ League, which was held at our home track. As with the Southern Athletics League, Lewes are twinned with Haywards Heath Harriers. Following a rather dismal turnout at the first meeting, we made up for it at Lewes, and both the men’s and the women’s teams had some good results.
It’s always difficult to get veterans into the sprinting events, but we were lucky to have a new man on our side – Mark Rahman. He ran the over 50s 100m in 13.5 seconds, and the 400m with a time of 63.1, coming 4th out of 6. Mat Homewood was also ‘lumbered’ with the ‘B’ string 400m sprint, but managed to come 3rd with 71.1 seconds.
In the women’s sprinting, Fiona Monson scored 2 points with a 17.9 in the 100m, and Chris Brightwell came third in the over 50s race. Fiona also ran the 400m, as did Andrea Ingram; both scoring 4 points each for the club.
Everybody wanted to do the 1500m it seems, and we ended up with 5 of the men doing these races, with 2 going as non-scoring runners. Simon Bomford came 3rd in the ‘A’ string race with a 5:12, and Mat Homewood came 2nd in the ‘B’ string with a time of 5:22. Andrew Chitty ran in the over 50s race, and came 4th with a time of 5:28. For the women, Andrea Ingram came 3rd in her race with a 6:53. Andrea also competed in the 2000m walk, and came first!
In the field events, Simon Bomford came 2nd in the Javelin (34.43m), Mat Homewood came 3rd in the ‘B’ string Hammer (17.69m) – missing out on 2nd place by a frustrating 10cm. Hamilton Thomas (now in his mid-70s) threw the Hammer 30.77m in the non-scoring event! Rick Pilling came 3rd in the over 50s High Jump (1.20m), and Mark Rahman (our new star sprinter) came 1st in the over 50s Triple Jump with 10.22m. For the women, Linda Tullett came 3rd in both the Hammer (6.31m) and the Shot (5.47m), and Fiona Monson won the Triple Jump with 7.00m.
Finally it was time for the 4x100m relays. Simon Bomford, Andrew Chitty, Mat Homewood and Mark Rahman stepped up for the challenge. Both Worthing and Hastings eased passed us within 200m, but we just held off Eastbourne, finishing 3rd out of 5 with a time of 57.5secs. Fiona Monson, Christine Brightwell, Linda Tullett and Andrea Ingam were up against some tough competition in the women’s relay, and finished 3rd in a time of 88.5secs.
The women’s team came 3rd overall, and the men’s team 4th.
Next event is at Lewes (again) on 27th June.
