Lewes AC wins East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League

In winning the league the Lewes AC cross country runners showed their true mettle by winning all but one of the six races that make up the league. With 14 participating clubs and spread across East Sussex each of the six courses presented different challenges including plenty of mud and many hills. Rising to the many challenges the Lewes AC team dominated the league and won with a score of 7 team points to the 15 points scored by Hailsham Harriers in second place. In third position was the combined team of Uckfield and Heathfield runners with 20 team points.

Scoring most points for the Lewes team and winning most individual prizes were the Lewes AC runners at the higher end of the age spectrum. Leading the charge for the men in the over 50 age category was Jonathon Burrell who won his age group with 782 points over 30 places in front of his nearest rival from Hastings AC. Andrew Chitty was dominate in the over 60 age group winning by an impressive margin with a score of 636 points. This translates into 134 points and race positions over the runner in second place from Eastbourne Rovers. Not to be outdone and also thrashing his nearest rival by 50 points and race places was Bob Hughes in the over 65 age category.

Progressively improving throughout the races was Ed Tuckly who improved his finishing position up by over 25 places from the first race to the last. Also finishing higher up in the later races was David Foster who improved by 22 places from first race to last and Alf Pollard who improved by 66 places. Siobham Boyer also massively improved her finishing position moving up 30 places in the last race over the first.

Also having impressive results were the women runners led by Helen Sida who was not only the third women overall in all of the six races with 787 points but narrowly missed the silver medal position by just 2 points and the gold medal by position by only 6 points. Helen also just missed winning her women over 45 age category by 2 points again scoring 787 points to the 789 points scored by Liz Lumber of Hailsham Harriers.

Maria Barrow in the senior women category also had close racing with her rivals from Hastings AC to finish third in the category with 762 points just 7 points off second position and 20 points behind the winner. However not to be denied first spot in their age categories was Karin Divall winning the women over 55 age group with 756 points and Anita Amies winning the women over 60 group with 693 points.
