Lewes AC top the team medal table at the Sussex Cross Country Championships

With 5 team medals across all age groups Lewes AC at the Sussex Cross County Championships shared the top of the team medal table with Brighton and Hove AC. Each club showed a metaphorical clean pair of heels to all other Sussex clubs across what was a very muddy and challenging course at Bexhill. Close behind in the team medal chase was Hasting AC with 4 team medals with Brighton Phoenix, Horsham Blue Star and Chichester AC each with 3 team medals.

Leading the medal charge for Lewes AC was the under 13 boy’s team of Will Carey in 5th position, Sam Horn 11th and Atticus Mohapi-Dobouny 15th. This gave a team total of 31 points which was the same as the Hastings A team. The Lewes gold medal win was however secured by Atticus who by finishing in 15th place scored better than the third placed Hastings team member in 21st position.

Moving up to the boys under 15 race the team secured a silver medal with Ben Martin leading the team by being 2nd overall and earning him an individual silver medal. Leo Brewer was 8th and Ben Walters 14th. Scoring 24 team points the Lewes team were behind the Chichester team who scored 14 points.

The team of the under 20 men kept up the medal winning streak by finishing in the bronze medal position with 27 points. This race produced the closest finish for team medals with just 4 points covering the medal winning teams. Worthing Harriers won the gold with 23 points, Chichester AC the silver medal with 26 points and Lewes AC the bronze medal with 27 points. There was close packing in the race by the Lewes runners with James Martin finishing in 8th position, Sam Jackson 9th and Tom Stone 10th.

Despite being hit by injuries the Lewes AC senior women’s team secured a gutsy and well earned bronze medal behind Brighton and Hove AC and Hailsham Harriers. With just 8 points separating the three teams it always begs the question ‘what if.’ Leading the women’s team in 7th position was Megan Taylor who over the last year has improved so much that she is becoming a formidable runner over both road and country. With a scoring team of four runners Emma Rollings was 12th Helen Sida 15th and Maria Barrow 23rd

The senior men’s team also secured a County bronze team medal just behind Brighton and Hove AC and Brighton Phoenix teams in gold and silver positions. Leading the Lewes AC team was Patrick Hough in 6th position followed by David Bradford in 12th position. Lewis Sida was 16th followed by Matt Bradford in 22nd place who whilst hating every step of the muddy course finished a few places in front of Chris Gilbert in 27th place. Alan Velecky in 32nd place made up the scoring team of six.
