Lewes AC second in first Cross Country race
Lewes AC thought that they had made a cracking start to the cross country season by winning the first East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League race held at Whitbread Hollow in Eastbourne.
However this was based on the provisional results and when the final results were circulated Lewes had to play second fiddle to Hailsham Harriers.
There were however some great individual performances in the various age related categories as over the season of 6 races there are individual awards to be won as well as the team prize.
In total 29 Lewes runners competed in the race with the two Bradford brothers leading the charge. David was first Lewes runner home in 4th position in a time of 29mins 18sec for the 5 mile course closely followed by Matt in 9th position in a time of 30mins 36secs. Alan Velecky and John Lowden were virtually joined at the hip throughout the race with Alan just finishing two seconds ahead at the finish with a time of 31mins 28secs. to John’s time of 31mins 28secs. John however maximised his brownie points by being the first over 50 in the whole race.
First women for Lewes was Sally Norris who finished in a time of 36.22 in 64th overall and first in the senior women age category. Second woman finisher for Lewes was Carole Walters in 70th position in a time of 39.55 followed by Karin Dival in 99th position in a time of 40.09.
In the veteran men’s 65+ category Lewes can boast two of the best over 65 runners in the County with Alf Pollard finishing first in his age category in a time of 41.11 and 107th Mike Lane also in the same 65 age category was second just behind Alf in a time of 41.41 in 111th position overall.
On the same day and flying the flag for Lewes AC in the West Sussex Fun Run League at Hickstead there were seven runners. Matt Homewood was first Lewes runner home in 25th position in a time of 33.51. The first Lewes AC women was Clare Anstee in 105th position in a time of 40.28.
