Lewes AC cross country teams poised to take Sussex titles

Another great set of results for Lewes AC runners at the Sussex Athletics cross country league race at Lancing. With only one more league race to go at Bexhill it is very tight at the top of the league for both men and women. Well placed to take the league title are the Lewes AC women’s team who are leading at the moment with 150 points. Close behind are Worthing Harriers with 160 points and Chichester with 165 points in third place. It will all be down to the last race so exciting racing can be expected. The photograph shows members of the Lewes AC women’s team after the race at Lancing.

The men’s team after three races and having only recently been promoted to the first division of the league are placed second behind Brighton and Hove AC. On Saturday at Lancing it was a really close race with Lewes AC on 92 points just edging into first team place in front of Brighton also on 92 points. With six runners to score for the team it was Andrew Masters in 21st position that secured the win by beating the Brighton sixth runner by 13 places.

Not only are the senior men and women’s team having great results but the Lewes AC veteran men’s team is also leading the pack by a massive margin. With 39 points Lewes leads Crawley on 82 points in second place and Brighton and Hove AC on 94 points.

Moving down the age groups the under 17 men continue their impressive season by taking first and fourth team positions at Lancing. This consolidates their first and third positions in the league after three races. The under13 boy’s team lead by Leo Brewer in third place in the race also had a very strong race. The Lewes team finished third with 28 points just behind Chichester on 25 points and Worthing on 27 points. This result also consolidates the Lewes AC boy’s under 13 team in first position in the league after three races.

In addition to the team successes there were some great individual performances. Rosie Gainsford was placed second in her under 13 girls race and Leo Brewer 3rd in the under 13 boy’s race. In the under 15 boys race Ben Martin was also placed third and in the under 15 boys race Aiden Briffett secured 4th spot.

The success that Lewes runners have been having this year has led to 16 Lewes AC team members being selected to be part of the Sussex County teams to compete in the Southern Counties Inter-County Championships at Oxford. Rosie Gainsford will run in the under 13 girls team with Nia Hall and Ruby Whyte-Wilding selected to run in the under 17 race. Three Lewes AC senior runners, Emma Robertson, Joscelin Lowden and Lara Barazzuol have also been picked to run for the County

For the under 13 boys team Leo Brewer and Ben Walters have been selected with Jay Atkins as first Reserve. Ben Martin has been picked to run in the under 15 boys team with Aiden Briffett selected for the under 17 team. Reflecting the strength of the Lewes under17 athletes 5 members have been selected to stand by as reserves these are Sam Jackson, Toby Baker, James Martin, Sam Rogers and Tom Stone.
