Lewes AC athletes top of the UK rankings
Topping the UK ranking in the 3000m steeple chase is Rob Mullett from the Lewes club. His top ranking time of 8mins 33.65secs was set when running in Sollentuna in Sweden on the 25th June. This time not only topped the UK rankings but was an ominous warning to his rivals when lining up with them at the British Championships at Birmingham last weekend.
True to form Rob, in a windy and tactical race, lead from the 2K mark to win the gold medal and be crowned British Champion in a time of 8mins 38.95secs. This was just 3 seconds ahead of Zak Seddon from Bracknell AC in second place and Luke Gunn from Derby AC in the bronze medal position.
Also at the top of the UK ranking are a number of junior Lewes AC athletes who will also be representing Sussex in the 60 strong team at the English Schools Championships to be held at Gateshead on the 10th and 11th July. To represent Sussex and to achieve the very high standards necessary to compete at English Schools is a fantastic achievement by the seven Lewes AC young athletes.
The English Schools Championships have Olympic level officials looking after the events and Polly Saunders has been selected to work with them as a starter’s assistant. This is a first for Lewes AC and a great opportunity for Polly.
Scott Staples will be competing for Sussex in the javelin event and currently is ranked 7th in the UK in the men under 17 age group. With a personal best throw of 57.29m he will be a strong competitor for a medal. Larissa Carter will be representing Sussex in the girls hammer event and with a personal best of 45.49m will be a strong and determined competitor.
There will also be strong competition for medals in the pole vault which is the event where five of the seven Lewes athletes will be competing and representing Sussex.
Bill Saunders is second in the UK boys under 15 pole vault ranking with a personal best vault of 3.70m. Jack Harris also in the boys under 15 age group is currently 5th in the UK with a vault of 3.30m.
In the girls under 17 age category Millie Hemsley is strongly moving up the UK ranking lists with 22nd place at the moment with a vault of 3.10m. In the under 15 category Freya Fitchett is currently 4th in the UK with a vault of 3.05m. All will be competing hard for medals at the English Schools Championships.
Also competing hard for a medal will be Livvy Connor who is currently ranked 6th in the women under 20 category with a personal best of 3.75m.
Not to be outdone and showing that there is a depth of pole vaulting talent at Lewes Gemma Tutton whilst still in the girls under 11 age group is ranked 2nd in the UK under 13 category with a vault of 2.30m.
