Bronze medals for Lewes AC runners at the Sussex Masters Championships

Looking to emulate the medal winning exploits of the younger Lewes AC runners at the recent Sussex Cross Country Championships at Bexhill Common the more senior club runners took to the hills at Lancing Manor. Competing in the Sussex Masters Cross Country Championships it was clear that the over 40 men were in medal winning form over the tough and hilly 6 mile course.

As the race developed it was a close battle for team awards between what now must be the three leading cross county clubs in the Sussex Lewes AC, Brighton & Hove AC and Brighton Phoenix. In the end the Lewes AC team secured the bronze medal position with 41 points just behind Brighton and Hove City AC (34points) Brighton Phoenix (36 points).

Whilst the battle for team awards focused on the three clubs the Lewes AC runners were competing against runners from all Sussex clubs and had to put in great individual performances to secure the bronze medal. First across the line for the Lewes team of four was Lewis Sida in 6th position closely followed by Chris Gilbert in 8th Andrew Masters 11th and Lee Woodgate 16th. Also having a tremendous run was Chris Hunt in 20th position.

Also in bronze medal form was Jonathon Burrell who had a great race to finish third just behind Jeff Pyrah from Hastings AC who secured the gold medal and Paul Cousins from Haywards Heath Harriers in silver position.

Just missing out on a medal in the women’s over 55 category was Karin Divall who finished in the unlucky fourth place. In the women’s over 45 team race the Lewes AC women also finished fourth with 37 point with the scoring members being Helen Sida (6th); Karin Divall (14th) and Catherine Swinson (17th)
