At Crowborough 10K many Lewes AC runners second placed but not second class

At the Crowborough 10K the last race and possibly the toughest of the year long Sussex Road Running Grand Prix there were many age group second places for Lewes AC runners. The best of the bunch must be Alan Jackson who not only secured second place in the over 45 age group but was 22nd overall in a time of 39mins 27secs. Not far behind Alan also second in his over 50 age group was Jonathan Burrell in 29th position with a time of 39mins 57secs.

Though out the race, with 366 runners Andrew Chitty and Gustavo Iriarte were neck and neck with only 30 seconds separating them at the finish. The younger Gustavo finished in 66th position in a time of 43mins 10sec whilst Andrew finished in 73rd position in 43mins 46secs. Whilst Andrew was pipped on the line by Gustavo he was able to claim bragging rights by finishing second in the men’s over 60 age group category.

In the men’s over 65 age group it was the bearded and ever present Bob Hughes that secured another second place for the Lewes AC runners with a time of 49mins 46secs finishing in 183rd position overall.

The first Lewes AC woman runner to finish was Katherine Emery in 119th position in a time of 46mins 03secs. Behind Katherine came Karin Divall who whilst finishing in 162nd position claimed 4th position in the women over 50 category.

In total 18 Lewes runners competed in the race including Shane Duncan (48th 42.09) Ian Fines (57th 42.41) Matt Homewood (65th 43.05) Mark Hodd (97th 44.58) Neil Baker (121st 46.12) David Foster (122nd 46.13) Ian Hilder (123rd 46.20) Tim Monson (176th 49.13) Shelley Cornes (180th 49.32) Helen Bowman (226th 52.33) and Lisa Jackson (232nd 52.58)

Before the Crowborough results were announced after the trace awards were made in the Harvey Curtis sponsored Sussex Road Race Challenge. This takes place over four races and is designed to encourage all the top 30 Sussex based men endurance runners to compete against each other. The aim is to increase Sussex race performances and times. In this year long hard fought challenge there were two Lewes AC runners finishing in the top five. David Bradford finished in 4th position and Chris Gilbert in 5th a major achievement for both and for the Lewes club.
