46 Lewes AC runners take on the Masters Mantell Challenge

With darkness closing in 46 Lewes AC runners posed for a group photograph following the 5.3 mile club handicap race over the Sussex Downs up to Black Cap and back. With each runners set off at different times according to their own personal handicap rating it was a question of not being overtaken and trying hard to overtake the runner in front of you.

The weather was perfect and the handicapping worked very well, so that a long line of red and yellow vests crossing the Downs bunched closer and closer together towards the final gallop down to the finish. In the end over three quarters of the 46 runners came within one minute of their predicted times with a mass finish across the line.

Pete Masters led all the way until the dew pond a few hundred meters from the finishing line, but he was passed by three other runners before he could snatch the prize with his name on it.

The winner of the Masters Mantell Trophy for 2015 was Karen Morse and the runner-up and first man in was Carl Dowling. In addition to these awards there were ‘age graded awards’ based on how close in percentage terms each runner was to a world best time for their particular age group.

These awards were claimed by James Martin (M15-19 – 74.71%); Ben Pepler (M 20-29 -71.49%); Michael Bale (M40-49- 68.27%); Chris Gilbert (M40-49 – 83.96% and best grade overall); Jonathon Burrell (M50-59 – 83.78%); Andrew Chitty (M60+ – 79.89%); Lara Barazzuol (F30-39 – 76.79%); Helen Sida (F40- 49 -79.84%); Karin Divall (F50-59 – 70.56%); Anita Amies (F60+ 75.61%)

The fastest male runner in the race was Mike Ellicock with a time 30mins 37secs and the fastest woman runner was Lara Barrazuol with a time of 35mins 06secs.
