Lewes AC women’s team rule the relay
Competing in the 100 mile South Downs Relay from Eastbourne to Winchester the Lewes AC women’s team were not only the winning team but broke the previous course record set in 2009 by the team of Hailsham Harriers. Finishing in a time of 11 hours 52 mins and 09 seconds for the 100 mile course this was not only a winning time but smashed the previous best time for a women’s team by over 30mins.
This remarkable win and time was set by a team of six running three legs each. With a support team in the mini-bus driving hard to get to the change-over points in front of the runners, the Lewes runners broke 15 of the 18 club leg records to set their record breaking time. This was a remarkable achievement as many of the previous club leg records were set by a strong Lewes AC women’s team that won the relay race in 2015.
The winning team were Megan Taylor; Laura Barazzuol; Emma Robertson; Emma Rollings; Helen Sida and Izzy Coomber.
With two wins in the 100 mile relay the Lewes AC women will be looking to complete a hat trick of wins in 2017.
There were mixed fortunes for the Lewes AC men’s teams. Just before the day the men’s A team had to drop out for a mixture of reasons which left the B team having to compete as the A team. Nevertheless the B team acquitted themselves well and finished a creditable 12th place out 30 A teams in a time of 12hours 37mins 17secs.
However without the elevation into the A team competition and if they had competed in the B team race the Lewes men’s B team would have finished in second place. This would have placed them not far behind the winning team of Arena 80 and nearly an hour ahead of the Brighton Phoenix team who finished in third place in the B team race.
