Team and individual prizes for Lewes AC runners in the Lewes 10 mile race across the Sussex Downs
Fresh from their team win at the Barns Green Half marathon when four Lewes AC men finished in the top seven in the race with over 1,000 competitors the club again won the team prize in the tough Lewes 10 mile race over the Sussex Downs. The winning team of four runners included David Robinson in 3rd place in the race in a time of 63mins 32secs. Close behind in 11th position was Matt Bradford in a time of 66mins 20secs followed by Ben Pepler in 20th position in 68mins 55secs and Jonathon Burrell in 21st position in 69mins 12secs.
Emphasising the strength in depth that the Lewes Club has at the moment in endurance running the second Lewes AC team finished in 4th position and was made up of Toby Baker (69.31); Andrew Masters (69.46); Ed Wheeler (71.27) and Ed Tuckley (71.51)
Also emphasising the strength of the club the Lewes AC women also won the team title in the race. Not only content with winning the women’s team prize the three Lewes AC team members finished first, second and third in the race overall. Winning the women’s race was Emma Rollings with a time 71mins 49secs for the 10 mile multi terrain race. In second position was Helen Sida in a time of 74mins 43secs followed by Megan Taylor in third position in 74mins 49secs.
Not content with winning the team prize each of the women’s team picked up an individual award in each of their age groups. Emma Rollings was the first women in the women aged over 35 category, Helen Sida first in the women aged over 45 and Megan first in the senior women category. David Robinson also picked up an award in the men over 50 category by coming third in the race overall.
In the five mile support race that preceded the main 10 mile race Lewes AC runners filled the first two places. Ben Martin won the race in a time of 30mins 18secs followed by Jasper Baker in second place with a time of 31mins 08secs.
The race attracted runners from across the whole of Sussex and beyond and also included 16 runners from Lewes AC’s twinned club from France. 25 members from the French club AS Marolle made the journey from the Loire Valley and were hosted by Lewes AC club members. First across the line in the 5 mile race in third place was David Taverne who is also the Club President. The first women from the French club in the 5 mile race was Micheline Farnier in a time of 38mins 17secs.
Also competing in the 10 mile race for the French club was Franck Mazeyrat who has run in everyone of the 30 Lewes 10 races since the French club first came to Lewes in 1986. Despite recovering from a knee injury Franck was determined to have competed in all of the races since the twinning arrangement was established 30 years ago.
