Herstmonceux Relay and Highdown Hike Successes for Lewes AC

There were 98 teams across all age groups competing in the relays in the grounds of Herstmonceux Castle. With laps of just over one mile and with this number of runners the first lap runners had to be quick off the mark to make any headway in the mad rush from the crowded start line.

The diminutive and speedy Izzy Coomber was first away and gave the women’s team a great start as she handed over to Lara Barazzuol for the second lap. It was not so crowded now as the Lewes AC women’s A team were beginning to pull away from the chasing runners. Amy Davila took the third lap and continued to increase the lead over the next team which by now was going to be the Lewes AC women’s B team. Emma Rolling completed lap four to secure the win for the A team in a combined time of 34mins 35secs.

Chasing the A team was the Lewes AC women’s B team lead off by Vicki Clark who also had to contend with 98 runners jostling for position on the first lap. Making light work of the first lap Vicki handed the baton to Ruby Whyte-Wilding to take up the running which she did to great effect. The third runner was Megan Taylor who continued to chase the A team runners before handing over to Izzy Coomber to complete the four laps in a time of 35mins 53secs. With first and second positions for Lewes AC women’s teams this was a great result.

Also having a great race amongst the 98 teams was the Lewes AC junior men’s team of Toby Baker, Jasper Baker, Tom Stone and Harry strong. Finishing in fourth position in a time of 32mins 40secs they were only beaten by senior men’s teams two of which came from Hastings.

Competing as the ‘Rosies’ the Lewes AC junior girls team came a creditable 8th position in the women’s competition with a time of 41mins 23secs. Rosie Gainsford, Beth Gainsford, Rosie Hobbs and Rosie Gainsford made up the team and there was little surprise when they called themselves the ‘Rosies’

Whilst there was all this action at Herstmonceux another bunch of 20 club members were taking part in the Highdown Hike a very tough race over the Downs behind Worthing. Leading from the front was Andrew Masters who came in 3rd position out of the 500 runners taking part in the race of nearly 5 miles. Finishing in 9th position in a time of 25mins 52secs was Mark Cage followed by Lee Chapman in 35th position in 27mins 37secs.

Having a great race between each other was Dominic Osman-Allu and Sally Norris who finished just 3 seconds apart. Whilst Dominic pipped Sally to the finishing line in 77th position in a time of 29mins 37secs Sally claimed bragging rights as she was 4th woman overall in a time of 29mins 40secs.
