Arunners Beach Run: A Memorable Evening for Lewes AC

LAC enjoys WSFRL ARUNNERS BEACH RUN

On Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, a group of expectant runners from Lewes Athletics Club travelled to Littlehampton to participate in the Arunners Beach Run, a favourite event in the West Sussex Fun Run League (WSFRL).

Among those representing our club were Andrew Chitty, Colin Bennett, Carl Dowling, Dominic Osman-Allu, Mathew Homewood, and Joe Lunt, alongside David Foster, who shared his experience with us.

David highlighted the camaraderie and support from participating in WSFRL events with his clubmates. “I always enjoy these events,” he said. “The great atmosphere and support from our club and others make these events special.”

Expectations met for an event suitable for all

David went into the event expecting a well-organised and inclusive run suitable for all levels of runners, from novices to the experienced.

He was pleased that once again the Arunners Beach Run met his expectations. “The event was incredibly well-organised and fun for everyone,” he remarked. “It was great to be a part of it.”

The draw of the WSFRL

When asked why he chose to participate in this fixture, David shared his fondness for the WSFRL. “I have always enjoyed the WSFRL; it’s a very friendly league with plenty of support,” he explained. “It’s welcoming to all, and you get to meet other club runners, building friendships over the season.”

Highlights of the evening

David’s favourite moment from the event was the unique experience of running along the beach on flat, firm sand—a setting unlike any other race. “The super setting and the post-race refreshments of tea, coffee, and cakes were fantastic,” he said. “There were plenty of opportunities to chat with other runners and share experiences.”

He also noted the challenging return leg of the race, running into the wind from the far eastern point, as a strangely enjoyable aspect of the evening.

Excellent organisation, and cheers to the marshals!

Good event organisation added to David’s positive experience. He welcomed the thorough documentation, the availability of course maps, and the helpful marshals who provided additional information when needed. “It was all so well organised,” he commented.

Looking forward to next year

David’s enthusiasm for the Arunners Beach Run was evident when asked if he would participate again. “I have run this race several times and always look forward to it each year,” he said. “There is great camaraderie and support from all who participate, and the marshals are always supportive and encouraging.”

To sum up

The Arunners Beach Run is a highlight for Lewes Athletics Club members. It combines a unique race setting with excellent organisation and a supportive community atmosphere. David Foster and his clubmates are already looking forward to next year’s event, eager to enjoy the camaraderie and challenges of running along the beautiful beach course.
