Breakthrough year for Lewes AC women cross country runners in medal bonanza
Over the 30 year history of Lewes AC no senior team has won a medal in the premier Sussex cross country league sponsored by Brooks. This year it has all changed with the women’s senior team breaking through the barrier in great style. The team not only won team gold against all the other major Sussex clubs but Josceline Lowden secured an individual gold medal over the four matches with Lara Barazzuol winning the bronze medal.
Showing the strength in depth of the women’s team not only did the Lewes A team win gold in division one but the B team won team bronze in the league’s second division. Contributing to the teams successes were Josceline Lowden; Lara Barazzuol; Emma Roberson; Megan Taylor; Nia Hall; Ruby Whyte-Wilding; Helen Sida; Lizzie Keep; Catherine Swinson; Karin Divall and Helen Bowman.
Chasing the women’s results were the men’s senior and veteran teams who were very nearly but not quite able to match the women’s success. The senior men’s A team came away with a silver medal in division one, the B team a silver medal in division two and yet another silver medal in division three for the C team. Winning team silver medals in the three divisions shows the depth of talent currently within the club and bodes well for greater results in next year’s competition with both the B and C teams now being promoted up a division.
Whilst the senior men’s teams just missed taking top spot in their leagues the Lewes AC veterans A team claimed team gold in their division with the B team taking 5th spot in their division. Not only did the men’s teams have a great result but there were also some great individual medal winning performances. Leading the over 40 veterans was Lewis Sida who won the individual silver medal with Chris Gilbert just behind winning the bronze medal. In the runners aged over 50 group Jonathon Burrell won the individual bronze medal
Moving down an age group or two the Lewes AC under17 men gained two team medals in their division. Not only did the A team win gold but the B team came away with the team bronze medal. Contributing to the success of these teams on Saturday were James Martin; Toby Baker; Harry Strong; Tom Stone; Sam Jackson.
Moving further down the age groups the under 13 boys team were also gold medal winners with the B team being placed 6th. Contributing to the teams successes on Saturday were Leo Brewer; Ben Walter; Jay Atkins; Will Carey; Sam Horn and Tom Nettleton. With very consistent running throughout the four league events secured Leo Brewer the individual bronze medal.
Finally just a couple of names to look out for in future – Eva Johnson-Ellis who had a great run to finish 9th in the girls under 13 division and Ella Mundy who had her best run of the season to finish 5th in the girls under 15 division.
