Lewes AC back to winning ways
Having suffered a 3 point defeat by Hailsham Harriers at the last Sunday Cross Country League race at Pett last month 27 club members turned up at the Ashdown Forest event determined to reverses the score line. This they did with tremendous effect winning by 307 points from their nearest rival in a race of 300 runners.
With a score of 574 points Lewes AC made sure of victory and has now won four out of five of the six league events with the final event due to take place next month at Blackstock Farm at Hellingly.
Leading the Lewes team in third position and the first over 50 man to finish in the race was Jonathon Burrell. This result cements Jonathon in first position in the individual awards for men over 50. These will be awarded at the end of the season. Showing that there is life in the Lewes old dogs Andrew Chitty is also leading the over 60 individual awards with his first place in this age category in the Ashdown race. Also first in his over 65 age group in the race and leading the individual placings is Bob Hughes with a fine run in 91st position in the race.
Whilst Jonathon, Andrew and Bob are leading their age categories the Lewes women runners are doing equally as well. In the women aged over 45 category Helen Sida is first is her age group in the league as is Karin Divall in the over 55 category and Anita Amies in the over 60 category. All three scored well in the Ashdown race with Helen 3rd over 45 woman to finish and Karin and Anita both coming first in their categories. It’s never too old to run!
Whilst the older Lewes runners are leading the way in scoring points for the team and also as individuals there is also great running from the younger runners helping to keep Lewes AC top of the league. Finishing in 36th position in the race and 2nd senior woman to finish Lara Barazzuol added great points to the Lewes team score. Close behind Lara as the 4th scoring senior woman and also scoring massive points for the team was Megan Taylor in 46th position overall.
Towards the front of the race Chris Hunt was placed 14th overall and the 5th man aged over 40 with Ed Tuckly close behind in 18th place and the 8th senior man. Gustavo Iriarte was in 21st position finishing as the 19th senior man.
