Lewes AC on track to win the East Sussex Cross Country League.
To spice up the Christmas break over 200 runners from14 Sussex clubs took on the challenge of a five mile race over the Sussex Downs at Firle Beacon. This was the third event of six in the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League. Lewes AC having won the first two events needed to win the Firle race to keep ahead of the pack to win the league.
Scoring 530 points the Lewes AC combined team of men and women were over 200 points ahead of Hailsham Harriers the club in second position so maintaining their push to win the league. The men’s team scored 146, their best score all season, far ahead of Heathfield on 453 points. The women’s team, lacking a few key runners, still came a good second with 384 points against Hailsham Harriers 272.
The men packed well at the head of the race with 5 runners in the first 10. Leading the Lewes team was David Bradford in 2nd position followed closely by Chris Gilbert (5th) Lewis Sida (7th) Jonathon Burrell (9th) and Sam Wray (10th) Jonathon Burrell securing the first man aged over 50 in the race.
Leading the women home was Helen Sida as the 6th women in the race followed by Megan Taylor (7th) Maria Barrow (14th) Karin Divall (20th) and Anne-Marie Turton (23rd)
Having now won the first three races the club is well placed to go into the remaining three events with a degree of confidence of retaining the League trophy won last year in a nail biting finish.
