Team and medal successes for Lewes AC runners at Bewl Water and Brighton Championships

Up against 800 runners entered in the race from across the South East and with strong London clubs in abundance Lewes AC secured two magnificent second placed team awards in the Bewl 15 mile event on Sunday. The event around the Bewl Reservoir is described as ‘undulating’ which is runners talk for hilly and tough.

Taking on the challenge and now in the veteran age category the men’s team of Chris Gilbert, Lewis Sida and Andrew Masters scored 64 points for their second place beating many teams of senior aged runners. Chris finished in 14th position in a time 1hour 35mins 59secs, Lewis finished 19th in 1hour 37mins 41secs and Andrew 1hour 39mins 59secs.

The women’s team of Helen Sida, Megan Taylor and Shelly Cornes also finished as second women’s team with an excellent team score of 68 points. Helen finished 17th women in 1hour 57mins 33secs, Megan finished 20th woman in 2hours 00mins 25secs and Shelly 31st in a time of 2hours 04mins 56secs.

In the age group categories Chris Gilbert was 4th in the men over 40 category and Lewis Sida 5th in the men over 45 category. However Lewis’s wife Helen did one better than Lewis and came 3rd in the women over 45 category.

Other Lewes AC runners tackling the course with their positions and times were Gustavo Iriarte (87th 1.50.11); Constantine Callifas (90th 1.50.40); Mat Homewood (152nd 1.55.06); Tony Deacon (159th 1.55.24); Mike Green (169th 1.56.48); Andrew Chitty (170th 1.56.48); Rachel Hornigold (316th 2.10.30 and Jeremy Wainwright (414th 2.18.52)

Whilst the adults were battling the course at Bewl Water some of the clubs younger athletes were competing in the Sussex Track and Field Championships at Brighton. There were two gold medals and one bronze in the 3,000m championship races.

In the under 15 boys 3,000m race the gold medal was won by Ben Martin in a time of 9mins 46.49 secs with the bronze medal being taken by Jasper Baker in a time of 10mins 36.66secs. Toby Baker in the under 17 boys 3,000m race took the gold medal with a time of 10mins 06.52secs.
