Lewes AC teams top of two leagues
Two Lewes AC teams have finished top of their leagues in two age groups. The club’s young under 13 and under 15 athletes finished top of the UKA Youth Development League following a closely fought match at Hastings. At the other end of the age spectrum the Club’s veteran athletes won the Sussex Masters league by winning all three matches.
The under 13 and under 15 athletes pulled out all the stops at their match at Hastings knowing that they had a reduced team due to some key athletes being away on school trips. Nevertheless there were some tremendous performances resulting in a string of personal bests and a new club record. The new club record was set by Ethan Bickmore-Vaughan who ran the U15 200m in a time of 23.6 breaking a long standing club record.
Going into the Hastings match it was neck and neck with the big London Club Newham and Essex Beagles. Lewes had 20 points to Newham’s 19 points. Despite a tremendous effort by Lewes athletes Newham won the match with the Lewes team second. Newham secured 7 match points at Hastings to the 6 points won by Lewes. This meant both teams finished the season with 26 points tying for first position. It was however the all round performances by the Lewes athletes over the whole season that secured the league win for the Lewes AC team. Even so it was a close thing with Lewes scoring 2,304 event points to the 2,209 points scored by the Newham team. Winning the league has been a fantastic all round effort by all the Lewes young athletes.
Other team positions were 1st Lewes 26 points: 2nd Newham 26points: 3rd Bexley AC 18 points: 4th Hastings AC 1774 points, 5th East Grinstead AC 1155 points, 6th Dartford Harriers 1127.5 points and 7th Medway Park Phoenix 4 points.
Not to be outdone by the younger generation the older ‘veteran’ athletes in the club also won their league. This was the Sussex Masters League and the Lewes AC team were up against teams from Brighton, Eastbourne, Worthing, Hastings and Arena 80. The Lewes AC veterans aged over 35, 50 and 60 won all three matches and notched up a maximum total of 18 match points against 15 by Eastbourne, 10 by Arena 80, 9 by Hastings, 6 by Brighton and Hove AC and 5 points by Worthing.
By winning the Sussex League the Lewes AC Masters team next challenge will be in early September when Lewes AC represent Sussex at an inter-county match at Ashford. Winning this league is a fantastic first for the Club as this is the first time the club has won the league since the club’s formation back in 1984.
