Lewes AC – Five firsts and two thirds
With the cross country season now well behind us and the track and field season well under way Lewes AC has continued its winter winning streak with five firsts and two thirds in the events that have taken place so far.
Over the May weekend the under 13 and under 15 Lewes AC athletes competing in the National Youth Development League secured a magnificent win at the club’s home event at the Lewes track. With 645 points Lewes young athletes finished well over 100 points in front of the strong London club of Newham and Essex Beagles AC who scored 535 points. Hasting AC were third with 438 points, Bexley AC next with 408 points, then East Grinstead with 280 points Dartford Harriers and AC 213 points and in seventh position were Medway Park Phoenix with 157 points.
As well as the club scoring a tremendous victory there were some really great individual performances with many personal bests from the competing Lewes athletes. A stand out performance was from Myles Bickmore-Vaughan who cleared 1.48m in the U13 high jump.
Switching from a Lewes AC team first to a Lewes AC individual first Sally Norris competing on Sunday in the very tough Three Forts Half Marathon over the South Downs was the first women to finish in a time of 1hour 43mins 38secs. Not content with winning this event Sally on the very next day competed in the Barcombe 10K and was again the first women to finish.
Not to be outdone the first three men in the Barcombe 10 were also Lewes AC runners with Chris Gilbert first, Pablo Ibargurem second and Andrew Masters finishing in third. The Baker Brothers followed by Dad also completed a clean sweep of medals in the 6K race at Barcombe.
Returning to the track and field competitions the older members of the club competed in the Sussex Veteran’s League at Eastbourne and probably for the first time in many years won the first event of three. With 104 points Lewes AC who are teamed up with Haywards Heath Harriers in this league were just 5 points in front of the Eastbourne AC and Hailsham Harriers joint team. In third position was Hastings AC with 75 points followed by Arena 80 with 63 points, Brighton and Hove City AC 44 points and Worthing in sixth position with 28 points. The Lewes AC women vets at the same match also had a great match finishing in third position behind Eastbourne in first and Brighton in second.
Whilst the younger athletes in the Youth Development League had a home match the older under 17 and under 20 Lewes AC athletes had an away match at Ashford against some strong London based clubs. In this league Lewes AC has teamed up with East Grinstead and Haywards Heath Harriers to create a composite team ‘Team Sussex’. There were some great performances over the whole event by Team Sussex athletes who finished with 518 points in third place behind the Ashford and Thanet combined team with 594 points and Crawley AC with 586 points in second position. The other teams were Bexley AC (337) Medway and Maidstone (303) Horsham Blue Star (290) and Invicta Paddock (227)
