Lewes AC still on a winning streak in the Cross Country Leagues
Just like buses league championships for Lewes AC this season comes in twos. Last week the club won the East Sussex Sunday Cross County League this week the Club became champions of Division two in the Brooks Sussex Saturday League. Setting themselves the target of winning their division the senior men triumphed with a points total of 241, a massive lead over the next club Haywards Heath Harriers who scored 745 points.
Not only did the senior men’s A team secure their win but the Lewes AC B team also won their division with the C team in third place followed by the D team in 6th position. A truly great performance by the seniors. Not to outdone by the seniors the veteran men’s team also won their divisional match on the day but over the four matches in the league had to take second place behind Crawley AC. The Lewes veteran’s B team came in 8th with the C team finishing in 15th position.
Still on a winning streak the senior women’s team also won their division scoring 270 points to the Brighton Phoenix team’s 390 points. The women’s B team finished the league in 9th position.
Whilst the team results were probably the best the club has achieved over the years there were also some really good individual results. Best of the bunch most be Sally Norris who backed up her individual gold medal in the Sunday League with a gold medal win in the Brooks Saturday league. Also wining individual medals were Josh Burgess securing a silver in the Senior Men’s category with David Bradford picking up the bronze medal. In the Veteran’s category Robbie James came equal first with two match wins and a second.
The closest and most exciting competition over the four matches was the fight between the Lewes AC under 15 boys team and the team from Chichester Runners and AC. It all came down to the last match where Lewes started the race with a 6 point lead over Chichester. In the race it was very close with Lewes just edging the team win by just one point. All team members contributed to the gold medal win with Aiden Briffet also wining the individual gold medal by one point from the leading Chichester runner.
There were also some great individual performances by the younger athletes from Lewes which bodes well for the future success of the Club. In the under 13 boys race at Lancing Ben Martin came 3rd which also guaranteed him the individual bronze medal for the league as a whole.
Over the season the results by the Lewes AC younger runners have qualified them to represent Sussex Schools in the Inter county Match at Chelmsford on Mar 23rd. Congratulations to Ben Martin, Grace Brock, Ella Munday and Jasper Baker.
