Sussex Cross County Championships – 6, January 2013
Great performances and results for Lewes AC runners and teams at the Sussex Cross Country Championships held at Stanmer Park. With over four hundred runners in all age groups competing from the 38 eligible Sussex Clubs Lewes AC turned out 43 runners.
First off were the Under 13 age groups where the boy’s team came in with the Silver Medal. Ben Martin had a great run and lead for most of the race and was only just squeezed into forth place right at the end of the race. Just behind Ben in 5th position was Jasper Baker who with Jay Atkins made up the Silver Medal winning team. Congratulations to both Ben and Jasper as they have both qualified to represent Sussex at the National Inter County Race in Birmingham. In the under 13 girls race Rosie Gainsford the youngest Lewes AC runner had a storming run to finish first Lewes in 19th position with Ella Fleming fast finishing in 31st position.
Another medal winning team were the under 15 boys who claimed the Bronze medal. Leading the team was Aiden Briffett finishing in 5th position and backed up by Sam Rogers in 13th position and Harry Strong in 20th position.
Not to be undone on the medal winning front the under 17 women secured a Silver Medal. The medal winning team was made up of Evie Rothwell in 8th position, Amy Davila in 9th position and Emma Johnson in 13th place.
With the junior races taking place in the morning it was the turn of the senior runners in the afternoon with the senior men first off at 1.30pm. There were some great Lewes performances in this race with the men’s team just missing out winning a medal by finishing in forth position. This is the best result ever for Lewes AC in the Sussex Men’s Cross Country Championships where all 38 Sussex Clubs are able to take part. The result confirms the great improvements the senior side of the club has made over the last year or so.
With over one hundred and thirty runners in the race David Bradford’s finish in 11th position was a really great performance. Next finisher for the team was Robbie James in 15th position followed by Josh Burgess in 31st position. Making up the successful team were Matt Bradford (34th) Mike Ellicott (49th) and Andrew Masters (53rd)
The senior women also had great individual performances as well as a great team result. First across the line for Lewes was Sally Norris in 19th position followed by Maddie Smith in 27th position. Making up the scoring four were Faith Daughtery in 47th position closely followed by Karin Divall in 48th position.
