Lewes AC in windy win at Firle Beacon
170 runners from 12 clubs across Sussex braved the very windy conditions at Firle Beacon in the third of the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League races. Lewes AC turned out 32 runners in total and was successful in getting nine runners finishing in the top twenty in the race.
Winning the race and also the first man over 40 was the Lewes AC runner Robbie James who finished the tough five mile race in a time of 30mins 28secs. Close behind was another Lewes AC runner David Bradford in 30.35. It was said that Robbie just managed to sneak ahead of David when running across the turnip field and held onto his lead to the finish.
Backing up the two front runners were a group of seven Lewes AC members in the top twenty finishing one behind each other in positions 13th to 19th. First of the group was Pablo Ibarcuren (34.33) John Lowden who was also the first man over 50 (34.34) Tim Calliafas (34.45) Chris Gilbert (34.51) Andrew Masters (35.46) Colin Bennett (35.52) and Mauro Lazzati (36.04)
Sally Norris was the first of the Lewes AC women finishing in 42nd position overall but fourth women in a time of 38mins 58secs. Second Lewes AC woman and ninth woman in the race was Katherine Emery in 40.42 followed by Karin Divall (43.21) Stephanie Crispin (47.19) Andrew Ingram (47.36) Anita Amies who was 2nd women over 55 (49.55) Bev Sheridan (52.31) and Charlotte Chapman (52.42)
The Lewes AC team was first in the race with a score of 575 points. This winning score is the best so far in the league and compares with Eastbourne’s 743 and Hailsham’s 761. This win by Lewes AC gives the club a clear lead in the League after 3 races with three more races to be held.
