Lewes AC Record breakers at the Brighton 10K

With 42 senior club members taking part in the Brighton 10K along the sea front with 3,000 other runners there were some amazing results for club members. First of the Lewes AC runners was Rob Mullett who finished in 6th position overall in a time of 31mins 32sec. This meant Rob was the first Sussex runner in the Sussex County 10K Championships and also the Lewes AC 10K champion as the club was holding its own championships as part of the race. Second club member in 23rd position was Dave Bradford in a personal best time of 33mins 10secs followed by his brother Matt in 30th position in 33mins 28secs.

In 89th position and 14th in his age category was Alan Velecky in 36mins 19secs followed by Andrew Masters in 104th position overall and 72nd in his age category in a time of 36mins 56secs. Andrew at the same time broke the club age group record for the 10K.

Other notable men’s performances included Simon Thomas who finished 9th out of 223 in the M50 category in a time of 39:26 This also broke the Lewes AC club record for the 50-55 age group. Other club record breakers were Chris Gilbert with 37:09 to break the M40-44 record: Andrew Chitty with 42.31 to break the M55-59 record: Bob Hughes with 47.45 to break the 65-69 record and Peter Whitworth with 54.17 to break the M70-74 record.

There were also other significant performances by club members with David Foster beating his 2011-12 best by nearly 5 minutes to finish in 42:58 and Chris Gilbert bringing his 10k times down over 4 races from 41:51 at Heathfield to 37:09 at Brighton.

First of the Lewes AC women runners was Karin Divall with a breakthrough run to smash her personal best by over two minutes with a time of 43.21. Karin’s performance put her 13th out of 282 runners in the F45 category. This also made Karin the Club’s overall 10K women champion 2012. Just behind Karin was Sally Norris in a time or 43.29 which put her 29th in her age category.

Both the times by Karin and Sally broke Lewes AC women 10K records with Karin’s time breaking the W50-55 age category and Sally’s time breaking the Senior Women’s club record.

Other record breakers were Clare Anstee who broke the W35-39 age category with a time of 48.57 and Anita Amies who with 52.18 broke the club record for the W55-59 age category.

The Brighton 10K was very successful race for Lewes AC members where 29 of the 42 ran a season’s best for the 10K with over half breaking their own personal bests. There were also 6 men running under 40 minutes for the first time. The club now has 11 men running under 38 minutes for a 10K this year and 24 running under 40 minutes.

These are great achievements and a product of the new coaching system introduced at the club.
