Southern Athletics League Hastings – Second in Match
On Saturday 21st April Lewes AC members were competing at Hastings in the newly formed Southern Athletics League. This league has men and women competing in the same club team whereas before the men and women competed in separate leagues. Up against teams from Brighton, Hastings and Invicta East Kent the Lewes combined team came a very creditable second position in the match. In gaining this position there were some superb individual performances perhaps the best being Sam Brown in winning the Pole Vault in a new league record with 4m 40cms. Sam also had a very busy match with great performances in five other events. He came second and gained valuable team points in the Shot Putt (9m 53cm) Discus (31m 68cm) Hammer (29m 52cm) and Javelin (46m 24cm).To all of this must be added his 3rd position in the Triple Jump (11m 12cm) to complete his busy and productive Saturday.
Also having a busy match were the two young sprinters of Aaran Guildford and Tom Woodhall. Aaron was second in the 100m (A) in a time of 11.2secs and Tom second in the B race in 11.7secs. In the 200m A race Aaron was also second in a time of 23.3secs and Tom 3rd in the 200m B race in 24.1secs. Both helped the 100m relay team to gain a second position in a time of 49.5secs.
Not to be outdone by the field event specialists and the sprinters the men’s endurance runners also had some great performances. Leading from the front was Robbie James and Matt Bradford. In the 800m A race Matt came third in a time of 2.04.2 and in the 800m B race Matt came first in 2.06.3. Going up a distance Matt secured first position in the 1500m B race with a time of 4.16.8 and Josh Burgess still with the Brighton Marathon fatigue in his legs came second in the A 1500m race in 4.16.8. Moving up to the 5000m Robbie James had another great race by winning the A race in a time of 15.55.4 and Tim Martin also winning the B 5000m in a time of 18.39.7.
As a combined men and women’s team there were also some great performances by the women. In the endurance races there was a whole packet of first and second results. In the 400m A race Emma Robertson was second in a time of 66.1secs and in the B race Lizzie Keep was first with 68.4secs. Moving up to the 800m Emma secured first place in the A race with 2.28.7 and Lizzie also first in the B race with 2.36.1. Moving up again in distance Angel Collins in the 1500m A race was second in a time of 5.03.5 and Maddie Smith first in the B race with 5.13.5. Moving ever upwards in distance Catlin Lloyd in the 3000m A race was first in 11mins 01 and Evie Rothwell first in the B race with a time of 12mins 31.6
In the sprint events Ella James was second in the 100m A race in 13.1secs and Faith Daughtery second in the B race in 13.9secs
In the women’s field events Ella James was first in the high Jump with a leap of 1m 50cm and third in the long jump with a jump of 4m 17cms. Emma Roberson came second in the Triple Jump with a jump of 8m 6cm. Also gaining valuable team points for the Lewes team were Naomi Lee (Shot Putt, Hammer and Javelin) Hanna MacDonald (Pole Vault and Discus) Faith Daughtrey (Long Jump and 200m) A revelation must be Pauline Keep who grabbed team points in Javelin, Hammer, Shot Putt, High Jump and Triple Jump. Pauline must be the competitor of the match!
