Great results for Lewes AC runners in the 2019 Moyleman Marathon
With fine weather and a gusty wind for the Moyleman off road marathon on Sunday the 17th March Lewes AC runners again came up trumps. With the 26.2 mile course starting and finishing in Lewes and taking in all the biggest hills around the County town it was never going to be an easy course but it’s clearly home turf for Lewes runners.
Leading the charge was James Turner running for Lewes who not only won the marathon but knocked seven minutes off the previous course record of 2hours 59mins 46secs set in 2015 by another Lewes AC runner Mike Ellicock. James time of 2hours 52mins 39sec was a fantastic achievement bearing in mind the amount of hill climbing involved and the lack of flat running!
The Moyleman Marathon is one of very few marathons that allow a relay to be part of the race with runners running half of the race each. This popular part of the event was won by the Lewes AC duo of Chris Coffey and Adam Vaughan with a fast time of 3hours 00mins 01secs. Having first thought they had missed the breaking the course record by 10 seconds it is now confirmed that they had in fact broken the previous relay record by 10seconds with the previous record set in 2015 of 3hours 00secs and 11 seconds. How close can you be over 26 miles!
Finishing in third place in the relay with a time of 3hours 11mins 14 secs was the Lewes AC husband and wife team of Helen and Lewis Sida. With both Lewes runners having been previously placed first in earlier Moyleman marathons a good result was expected.
Lewis won the marathon outright in 2018 with a time of 3hours 13mins 44secs and Helen was the first women home in 2018 with a time of 3hours 52.33. However it was in 2016 that Helen had set the course record of 3hours 42mins 44 secs. This record still stands as the winner of the 2019 race was Jade Elphick from Portslade Hedgehoppers with a time of 3hours 44mins 40secs.
