South of England Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 21-22 January 2012

Lewes AC athletes produced some very good results at the South of England Indoor Championships last weekend.

On Saturday Sam Brown placed sixth in the Senior mens Pole Vault clearing 4.20m, well down on his personal best but at not his favourite venue! James Shackleton cleared 3.20m just short of his personal best to take 4th place in the under-17 mens Pole Vault.

Ella James finished 10th in the under-17 women’s Shot Put with a personal best of 6.40m. In the High Jump she had been struggling in training, having issues with her run-up, but successfully cleared 1.45m, 1.50m and 1.55m on her first attempts. Her personal best is 1.60m and she just could quite clear this height on the day, finishing 7th out of 14.

Sunday started badly for the Vaulters with Emilie Blackwell, sporting her new club colours of Blackheath & Bromley and making her debut in the under-20 age group, failing to clear her opening height.

However Livvy Connor equalled her own club indoor record in the under-15 girls Pole Vault. She cleared 3.10m on the first attempt, a new championship record by 9cm until her rival Natalie Hooper from Sutton also cleared 3.10m and then 3.20m. Livvy had three very close attempts at 3.20m but had to settle for the silver medal. There should be an interesting tussle as the season develops, with Natalie and Livvy sitting well clear at top of the UK under-15 girls’ rankings.

Vicky Warren, who has been having a nightmare time with illness and has not been able to train on a regular basis, cleared 2.40m to take 6th place in the under-15 girls’ Vault. Polly Saunders making her debut as an under-15 girl vaulter added 17cm to her personal best, clearing 2.20m for 10th place, a gutsy performance from a young lady who has only had two training sessions since coming back from a broken left arm. It does explain why she was taking off from the wrong foot: work in progress!

Livvy Connor also entered the U15 girls 60m sprints at Lee Valley, under protest as she does consider anything over her 25m Pole Vault run-up to be “distance running”. However as usual she excelled and her personal best performance of 8.41 seconds progressed her to the semi finals (so that she had to run again) and broke her own club record.
