Lewes AC wins East Sussex Cross Country League
At the league’s final cross country race at Pett Village Lewes AC were again confirmed as the League winner with 7 points to the 11 points scored by second team made up of the combined team of Wadhurst Runners and Crowborough Runners. Yet again it was a close battle with the second placed team but Lewes AC came through to make it the 10th time in a row that the club has won the league. The league is made up of 12 teams drawn from 16 clubs.
With the six events taking place across the muddy fields of East Sussex a serious knowledge of Sussex mud was obtained by all runners. With matches at Eastbourne, Wadhurst, Uckfield, Heathfield, Lewes and Pett Village a variety of courses challenged all the runners.
Throughout the six matches 550 runners turned out at least once for the 16 clubs competing in the league. Mixed teams of 20 runners were required to make up a club team or a combined team. Men and women across all age categories from senior to veteran must be included in the team to score points for the team or individually.
Whilst the league is a team challenge there is also the opportunity for team members to win individual trophies. Lewes AC runners won 11 individual trophies across a range of age groups showing the strength in depth of the club. Yet again the women runners came out tops with 11 trophies to the men’s 4.
Sally Norris won the gold award in the women aged over 35 with Katherine McCorry taking the silver in the same age category. Moving up the age groups Sarah Godley picked up a bronze in the women over 40 with Jo Miles a bronze medal in the women aged over 45.
Helen Sida was awarded a silver award as a woman aged over 50 and Karin Divall went one better to scope a gold award in the women aged over 55 with Andrea Ingram getting a bronze in the same age group.
Robert Cooper was the best placed Lewes AC man in the over 40 age category winning a bronze award. There were two Lewes awards in the men over 50 category with Jonathon Burrell winning the gold prize and Dominic Osman-Allu getting a bronze. Also securing third place in the men aged over 60 category was David Prince-Iles.
